He describes the stories of Billy Pilgrim, who believes he was held in an alien zoo and has experienced time travel.īilly Pilgrim, a chaplain's assistant in the United States Army during World War II, is an ill-trained, disoriented, and fatalistic American soldier who refuses to fight ("Billy wouldn't do anything to save himself"). The story is told in a nonlinear order, and events become clear through flashbacks (or time travel experiences) from the unreliable narrator. He had just emptied his seminal vesicles into Valencia." "Billy made a noise like a small, rusty hinge. Slaughterhouse-Five, 1969, Kurt Vonnegut What he meant, of course, was that there would always be wars, that they were as easy to stop as glaciers. ‘I say, “Why don't you write an anti- glacier book instead?”’ ‘You know what I say to people when I hear they're writing anti-war books?’ I said that to Harrison Starr, the movie-maker, one time, and he raised his eyebrows and inquired, ‘Is it an anti-war book?’ Over the years, people I’ve met have often asked me what I’m working on, and I’ve usually replied that the main thing was a book about Dresden. Everything is supposed to be very quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds.Īnd what do the birds say? All there is to say about a massacre, things like " Poo-tee-weet?"" - Slaughterhouse-Five, 1969, Kurt Vonnegut Everybody is supposed to be dead, to never say anything or want anything ever again. "It is so short and jumbled and jangled, Sam, because there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre. Now what was the grand result of all these struggles? Europe expended millions of her treasures, and the blood of two millions of her children and a handful of quarrelsome knights retained possession of Palestine for about one hundred years!" - Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (1841) by Charles Mackay Romance, on the other hand, dilates upon their piety and heroism and pourtrays in her most glowing and impassioned hues their virtue and magnanimity, the imperishable honour they acquired for themselves, and the great services they rendered to Christianity. "History in her solemn page informs us, that the crusaders were but ignorant and savage men, that their motives were those of bigotry unmitigated, and that their pathway was one of blood and tears. So it goes." - Slaughterhouse-Five (1969) by Kurt Vonnegut Even though you are no longer with us (So it goes), your message will live on forever."It was the next night that about one hundred and thirty thousand people in Dresden would die. I will recommend your masterpiece to others who are also struggling with PTSD in hopes that it brings them the same peace it brought me. I knew then that I wasn't just holding a book in my hands but instead, a masterpiece. It had been the answer I was searching for all these years. The answer the Tralfamadorians gave Billy was perfect. The very first thing he asked them was, "Why me?" Something that I had asked myself over and over throughout the years. That was when Billy Pilgrim first visits Tralfamador. It made me feel normal.Īnother part of the novel made me love it even more. You didn't blame me for looking back and when you said that it was the human thing to do it made me feel accepted. ![]() Those words were as if you were speaking to me directly. When you spoke about Lot's wife looking back and how you didn't blame her because it was the human thing to do, I felt like you understood. Your novel gave me comfort and a deeper understanding of PTSD. I had always had these poems in me but was always unable to put them into words. I hadn't been able to write about it until I read your novel. I would like to personally thank you because after I read Slaughterhouse Five I was able to write three poems regarding my traumatic experience.
